Mergers and Accusations is a play by playwright-cum-lawyer Eleanor Wong that explores the societal and personal significance of romantic relationships and gender roles through the lens of a high-flying sharp-talking closet lesbian lawyer, Ellen Toh, and her best-friend-turned-marriage-partner, Jonathan Chin. Toh and Chin enter into a marriage that is strictly of convenience – Chin’s in it for the children and Toh for the security and companionship that a societally recognized relationship would offer her. Four years and one child on, will the couple remain in the steady marriage, or will their worlds be shaken up by Lesley, the “lesbian lawyer from London”?
Co-directed by Bozy Lu and Shaun Lim, two graduating theatre enthusiasts from Yale-NUS College, this rendition of Mergers and Accusations is set in 2018, twenty-five years since it was published as part of Eleanor Wong's Invitation to Treat trilogy. The play previously won the National Book Development Council of Singapore Award (Drama) in 1996 and was named one of the Classic Singapore Plays by the Straits Times in 2014.
